Therapy Dogs Pay a Visit to Cumberland
Cumberland Elementary students are treated to a visit from two different therapy dogs two or three times a month.
The dogs, including Cooper, the mini labradoodle pictured here, and his handler, Danielle Gattuso, are a part of the organization Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD).
Library Media Specialist, Sophia Garcia-Smith, said the students visit with the dogs during their scheduled LMC time.
Garcia-Smith said during each visit the students learn about the dogs, their owners and how they are trained.
According to the ATD website, studies have shown a decrease in stress levels and anxiety during therapy dog visits.
"We are fortunate to have this opportunity at Cumberland and have seen the benefits of the therapy dog visits for ourselves," said Garcia-Smith.
