The Great Communicators Club
Third through fifth graders at Cumberland Elementary School have the opportunity to participate in the Great Communicators Club every Wednesday during lunch and recess.
The club, which is run by Speech Language Pathologist Mr. Gary Niemiec, allows students to get to know one another and build upon their communication and socialization skills.
Mr. Niemiec starts each session by selecting a topic and discussing it with the students.
A recent topic was what the students did over winter break and what they are looking forward to doing over spring break.
The students take turns talking and when one student is done, other students usually have follow up questions.
The group enjoys making connections with one another. For example, one student said they were going to Cancun over spring break and Mr. Niemiec made the connection that he's been to Cancun a few times and briefly shared his experience.
The students play a game each time they meet which involves picking a small number off a board, reading a particular scenario and coming up with answers to the following questions: What is the size of the problem? What would be an expected solution? What would be an unexpected solution?
All of the students have the opportunity to answer the questions as well.
The club is a great way for students to get to know one another, while strengthening their communication and socialization skills.
