Planting on the Cumberland Prairie

Planting on the Cumberland Prairie
Cumberland

In honor of the 25th Anniversary of Cumberland Prairie, students in Ms. Sweeney and Mr. McKelvey's classes had the opportunity to help plant new greenery along the path of the prairie, which is located directly behind Cumberland Elementary School.

The students planted greenery that was native to the area and donated by the University of Illinois Master Gardeners.

Students removed the small plants from their containers, planted them in pre-dug holes and then watered them.

The students also had a fun time walking around the prairie and picking up cicadas that had made their home in the trees and plants.

Master Naturalist Lynora Jensen showed the students how they can identify a male cicada from a female cicada, as well as how and why the insects make their loud buzzing sounds.
