Learning the Impact an "E" Can Make!

Cumberland Elementary School second graders in Mrs. Susan Duffy's class are now experts in the final "e" sound thanks to a fun and engaging phonics lesson.

At the start of the lesson, the students partnered up and read through as many words as they could within one minute.

They then gathered on the carpet with Mrs. Duffy and worked on forming words that included the final "e."

For example, one of the words the students concentrated on was "hop," which, after an "e" was added to the end of it, created the word "hope."

The students worked with Mrs. Duffy on multiple words like this, saying the words with her and then writing them on their dry erase boards.

After the word activity, they went back to their desks and pulled out a small bag that included red and blue letters.

The red letters were vowels and the blue letters were consonants.

The students had to use the letters to create as many words as they could in five minutes.

As they made each word they wrote it down on their worksheet.

The students had a great time learning how a simple "e" can change the sound and meaning of a word.
